PAST STUDENT BRID BRADLEY

PAST STUDENT –BRID BRADLEY

I started in Coláiste Abbáin in 2006. I remember walking through the front gates I was nervous and scared yet full of anticipation and excitement for what lay ahead. Little did 12 year old me know that I would feel those same emotions almost 11 years later as I walked back through the gates of Coláiste Abbáin, only this time I wasn’t the student - I was the Art Teacher!

My love for art was nurtured in Coláiste Abbáin. The art room was my haven and the wonderful Ms. Byrne was so encouraging. She always motivated me to try my best and to challenge and enlighten my creativity. Whenever I’m asked about school I always seem to end up talking about the strength and support the school community had and I’m proud to say I have seen it is still as strong as ever! I finished school in 2011 but the influence and support didn’t end there. That September I began studying Graphic Design in Waterford Institute of Technology and I graduated in 2015. I practiced as a freelance graphic designer and some smaller art projects for myself, but I always felt I wanted to bring my studies further.

In 2016 I started in Limerick School of Art and Design where I studied a Masters in Art and Design Education with digital media. I returned to the school gate while on teaching practice, full of the same nerves and anticipation. It was wonderful to be allowed back to experience a different side of the classroom. At the moment I’m happily living in Limerick City and in November I will officially graduate as an art teacher. I hope that wherever this career into teaching art takes me the influence of Coláiste Abbáin will always be on my side.

PAST STUDENT VINCENT BRADLEY

"I attended Coláiste Abbáin between 1994 and 1999, and I enjoyed my time there immensely. I loved the mix of academic, sporting and extra-curricular activities.

My main interests back then were sport and music, and it was the latter that I pursued after the Leaving Cert. I did a course which covered the areas of music technology, sound engineering, event production and radio, and pretty unexpectedly, I got my first job in radio in 2000 when I joined the sports team at South East Radio.

After three years there, I moved to Waterford to become part of the team at Ireland's first regional radio station - Beat 102-103, which launched in July 2003. Initially, I focused solely on sports journalism but in 2006 a new breakfast programme was launched and I was asked to be one of the presenters. Almost thirteen years later, Beat Breakfast continues to grow. We've been all over the south east and beyond, covering music festivals, sporting, and cultural events and getting to meet people from all walks of life. It's a very unique job and one I've always enjoyed.

I'm fortunate to have been invited back to Colaiste Abbain on a number of occasions - most recently for the official opening of the new building. I was blown away by the new facilities and I feel very jealous of today's students!

I wish the college every success in the future."VBS
