When students come into first year, their reading and numerical abilities are assessed and those students in need of learning support are identified.
All students study a set of core subjects that include the following:
- French or German
- Civic Social and Political Education (CSPE)
- Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE)
- Computers: ECDL options, Scratch Programming, Website Design and more...
Students choose additional subjects from the following
- Business Studies
- Home Economics
- Technical Graphics
- Junior Certificate Short Courses - ( P.E & Sports Journalism)
Coláiste Abbain re-introduced the Transition Year (TY) programme in 2015. As a result of the interest and success of the programme it will be offered again in the coming year (2017/8).
Transition Year is a one year schools based programme, designed to act as a bridge between Junior and Senior cycle. The programme is designed to facilitate the smooth transition from the dependent learning of the Junior cycle to the more independent self-directed learning of the Senior cycle.
The programme offers the student the space and facilities to mature and promotes increased social awareness and social competence. The “TY” at Coláiste Abbain provides a broad variety of learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
The comprehensive programme at Coláiste Abbain aims to improve skills and encourage maturity by providing a variety of opportunities to:
Discover personal strengths
Learn about leadership, co-operation and dealing with conflict
Work as part of a team
Develop enterprising skills
Sample and discover new subjects
Make informed choices of the Leaving Certificate subjects
Gain knowledge and experience of the working world
Discover new career opportunities
As a result students explore their own talents and abilities beyond the classroom and are expected to take responsibility for themselves and their future.
Transition year is a wonderful opportunity for the student to mature and develop socially, maintaining the academic skills acquired throughout the Junior Cycle, which will benefit students substantially when the time comes to make decisions on the Senior Cycle. Our Leaving Cert students are divided on the basis of subject choice. All students study a set of core subjects that includes the following:
- Career Guidance
Students can choose additional subjects from the following:
- Construction Studies
- Home Economics
- French or German
- Design and Communication Graphics
- Agriculural Science
- PE (Senior Cycle Physical Education Framework)
This is a type of Leaving Cert in which the students sit six regular Leaving Cert subjects and two link modules as follows:
- Preparation for the World of Work
In addition our LCVP students study a Basic French unit.
The other feature that characterises the LCVP is that the subject choice must include a certain combination of practical or business subjects.
The reading and numerical abilities of incoming first year students are assessed with standardised tests and learning support is made available to those that require it.
Students are withdrawn individually or in in small groups during First and Second Year and assisted by our Learning Support teacher in both English and Maths.
Guidance & Counselling
The Guidance Counsellor is available to all students and parents. A Career Guidance programme is conducted with Leaving Certs.

Our school has a discipline system that has been put in place to ensure the smooth running of the school while respecting the rights of students, parents and staff alike. Our discipline system consists of the following:
Every student carries a diary which contains a copy of the school rules. The diary is used by the student to record homework assignments. Teachers may enter comments about a student's progress and parents may communicate with the school by entering notes. The class teacher reviews the diary once a week and enters a comment.
Each class is a assigned to a Class Teacher. This teacher meets the class once a week, reviews the student diaries and records all complaints about a student's behaviour. The Class Teacher may contact parents on behalf of subject teachers and occasionally may refer a student to the Discipline Board. A Class Teacher may decide to place a student "on report" for a period of time. Finally the Class Teacher reviews the results of Christmas and Summer Exams and comments appropriately.
When a student is placed on report he/she carries a report sheet to every class of the day. Teachers record comments about the student's progress on a class by class basis. This enables the student to concentrate on his/her behaviour one class at a time and to accumulate a record of progress.
For repeated breaches of classroom rues or general school rules a student may be placed in reflection. This means that the student will spend some time in lunchtime detention filling out a reflection book. This book must then be completed at home and returned next morning.
